Following the French Revolution, the Royal Parks were opened up to the people for the first time. Going for picnics in these parks became a popular activity among the new emancipated citizens. Shortly afterwards, at the start of the 19th century, The Picnic Society, was born in London. An association that met frequently outdoors and each member was expected to contribute part of the entertainment and refreshments to the encounter, without an specific host. Using this premise as a starting point, and in the style of the Picnic Society, CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo invited Ramón Mateos, Manuela Moscoso and José Luis Villalobos to design a program of activities for the Centre's rooftop terrace.
On some Thursdays, from 21 May to 24 September, our rooftop will become a space in which we will offer a program of activities in which the corporeal and the sonorous will mix with the educational and participative.
We hope to see you at our dance, music, debate and activism picnics this summer.
PICNIC SESSIONS 2009 PROGRAM:
21 MAY HYPERPOTAMUS CONCERT
4 JUN GOODIEPAL CONFERENCE
MAY - SEPT
“Jesus is dead, Einstein is dead, Kafka is dead, Kahlo is dead, and Elvis, and Tweety Bird and I don't feel too good". From May to September, Lilli Hartmann will offer one unscheduled performance per month in the public space of Móstoles. Only the locations of these will be made public. To discover the, check the map located on the website and rooftop terrace of the Centro.
A festival of vocal rhythms and loops, bathed in enormous doses of humour and fantasy: this describes the concerts of a Madrid artist, Hyperpotamus, who makes music a capella, without any accompaniment, through four microphones, a loop pedal and litres of water. He is now self-editing his debut album, "Largo Bailón", a crafted-sonic work in which the only instrument used is his voice, and all of this without the push of a major record label and with no more promotional pomp than simple word-of-mouth.
Recently returned from the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, Hyperpotamus will continue to present his album in Europe and the USA throughout 2009.
"Radical Computer Music and the War on the Scandinavian Education System"
The work of Danish artist, Goodiepal, former electronic producer and computer programmer and current-day sui generis, bizarre and hilarious enemy of "Computer Music" and "Media Art", lies somewhere between absurd theatre, music and conference. An evening that will take place amidst diagrams, drawings, various theories and an iconoclastic spirit. Or a picnic like you've never enjoyed before...
The second part of the Folklore series in which Patricia Esquivias recounts the intrinsic relationship between History and the histories of Spain. Supporting her words with a conceptual map, images on paper and graphic symbols, Patricia Esquivias narrates for a classroom audience, in a learning-level English, the similarities and differences between Philip II and Julio Iglesias.
Performance: Gabriel Acevedo Velarde
This autobiographical performance was born as a result of two events, a move to Berlin and an article published by the researcher, Bonnie Bassler, which would revolutionise the world of intercellular communication with the theory of Quorum Sensing. Solitude, isolation, euphoria and, above all, love, emerge as abstract axes to compose visual and sound forms.

Madrid Philharmonic Youth Orchestra
Over two days, Staalplaat Soundystem, a multidisciplinary group from Berlin, will settle in the Centro to show children how to make do without expensive Japanese tools... With Staalplaat Soundsystem everything they need can be found in their kitchen or storeroom. Electric blenders, vacuum cleaners and numerous utensils will all be subjected to a musical symbiosis together with the children's musical instruments. The workshop will have two elements: first, the development and construction of instruments, and then their presentation in the context of a concert by the children together with Geert-Jan Hobijn and Carsten Stabenow, members of Staalplaat.
A group session, in which the audience will decide which music should play, this is the underlying idea behind this Picnic Set. We invite you all to come to the Centro with your favourite songs (in CD or LP format) for Ramset to season and mix the selections of such a distinguished audience, an audience we would urge to bring in the most remarkable songs, whatever the style. Born in Madrid, Ramset is the most recent member of a family, NET28, led by Alex Under, Tadeo and Damian Schwartz; a very young producer and DJ destined to become a key element on the national electronic scene, thanks to both his talent and his exquisite taste.

Help Bill Gates NGO in help from Bill Gates
This project proposes creating an NGO with a view to gathering funds for Bill Gates given his current economic condition, due to his multi-million dollar donations to the most needy and the sanctions his company, MICROSOFT, has been forced to pay all over the world.
The NGO "HELP BILL GATES" emerged with a view to resolving this situation, by sending the full amount of the donations received to his foundation. A piggybank will be placed on the Centro's Rooftop Terrace to collect funds.

Created in Los Angeles in 1994 by two AIDS activists, over the years Ultra-red has swelled its ranks with artists, researchers and organizers linked to various social movements (migration, anti-racism, community development, etc). Its main activity revolves around the exploration of acoustic spaces such as social relations defendants, which they call "militant sound investigators" who converge in the organization and analysis of socio-political struggles.
AIMED AT ARTISTS, MUSICIANS, THOSE INTERESTED IN SOCIAL ACTIVISM MOVEMENTS, COMMUNITY WORKERS, MILITANT RESEARCHERS AND STUDENTS
What sound does a community organising itself make?
In their workshop Madrid Encounter, Ultra-red explores the work of the educator, Paulo Friere, and how the methodology described in his “Pedagogía del Oprimido” (Pedagogy of the Oppressed) challenges the relationships and languages used to exert the pedagogical and activist art at this moment in time.
THURS. 16 jul
The group of artists and activists formed by Ultra-red will present a workshop in two sessions in the CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo. Using the experiences and contributions of the participants as their starting point, the workshop will include drifts through the urban space, auditions, creation of new strategies for group action, and research into crucial concepts of political processes, political activism and participation.
Ultra-red: founded fifteen years ago in Los Angeles, conducts Militant Sound Investigations together with social justice movements in which sound is both the research medium and the research space. In this time, Ultra-Red has used sound to analyse the anti-racist movements, the migration struggles, the mobilization of the homeless, the okupa movements and the activism against AIDS.
Ultra-red directs the activism towards the ear: the sound of communities joining forces, the acoustics of dissident spaces, the demands and desires of our voices and silences, and the echoes of historic struggles. This investigation takes shape of recordings, art exhibitions, performances or simple drifts. The members of Ultra-Red work with associations such as the Rural Racism Project (Devon, UK), the independent community organization Union de Vecinos (Los Angeles), the German anti-racist Kanak Attak, the Community HIV/AIDS Mobilisation Project (New York/Los Angeles), and Woodcraft Rangers which provides educational programs in 61 different schools in Los Angeles.
You bring your experiences, open ears and a cooperative attitude with you. We'll look after the equipment, materials and food.
The Festival 143D has been celebrated at will since the start of the millennium. It consists of a celebration, a meeting around a screen in which anything is possible. The limits are imposed by the participants, the public and the videos presented at each edition. The bases are as arbitrary as they are flexible, the choice of the winners is dictated by the audience attending the festival. The award: “La Delicia de Oro”, a beautiful ham. The videos projected have a duration of less than 5 minutes, and all sorts of proposals are accepted, narrative shorts, video art, documentary, anything that can be projected in a "Video" format in its broadest definition. The sole premise apart from duration, is that the "works", "pieces", "videos"... or whatever, should try to be entertaining.
The duo formed by Nik Kosmas and Daniel Keller, a duo living in Berlin but originally from Detroit and Minneapolis respectively, will surprise us at the close of the picnic session with a performance created specifically for the Centro. 3D AIDS work with different mediums that combine technology, popular culture, Internet and/or social activism with mystery and esotericism.
DJ TRES (Glue Kids • HotSource.de)
We will complete our program with a session by Dj Tres, a man who divides his time between Madrid and Berlin, where he has created the group Hot Source together with Benski and Sneaky. As a musician and producer, he has collaborated with artists such as Strand, Big City Lover, RQM, Sneaky –Fingathing– or Dead Capo and is preparing his debut single with the contributions of High Priest (Antipop Consortium) and Inés Pardo (Lone Ark Riddim Force) under the alias of Glue Kids. His stratospheric mashups combine hip-hop with disco, pop or house music... from Roxy Music to Public Enemy, with stops in the most unexpected terrains.
